Port-Cartier, Sept-Îles
Port-Cartier just south of the 50° parallel is the starting point
to the vast Duplessis region. Of first note as you enter the sector
along Highway 138 are the endless beaches sculpted by the sea from
the fine sand of Rivière Pentecôte. Hamlets nestled here
and there dot the coastline like scenic signposts pointing the way
to Port-Cartier and Sept-Îles, the two main urban areas. These
two cities—the mining capitals of the North Shore—compete
for the title of second largest port in Canada, after Vancouver.
Close to these ports lie islands adeptly developed for recreational
use. Enjoy a visit to the Port-Cartier–Sept-Îles Wildlife
Reserve, or stop off at the ZEC Matimek along the Sainte-Marguerite
River. You can also board the train that links Sept-Îles to
Labrador City and Schefferville, which transported its billionth ton
of ore in December 2004. Once past Sept-Îles, you’ll cross
the Moisie River as you start off through beautiful Minganie, a trip
of some 100 kilometers.
